Activant Custom Education Program Helps Distributor Develop Employee Training Program

Rene Savage, system administrator at Stellar Industrial Supply, works hard to ensure that every employee gets the most out of her company's Activant solution. It is a difficult task that is further complicated by the fact that the company employs almost 100 people at five Washington locations.

Activant's Custom Education Program helps make Savage's job a little easier. The Custom Education Program is a free service through Activant's online support program that helps distributors pinpoint training needs and develop customized programs for continuing education.

The Custom Education Program allows system administrators to generate diagnostic tests customized for their employees, based on the results of an operational survey. These tests not only identify knowledge deficits, but can also be used for benchmarking employee expertise or designing certifications and training incentive programs.

Plus, when using the Custom Education Program, distributors receive a training resource guide that helps them learn what Activant educational and training tools are available to their employees.

"One of our corporate goals is to make sure every employee is well trained," Savage says. "Before the Custom Education Program, we didn't even know where to begin. This definitely helps us find targeted resources that help improve our employees' effectiveness."

Pushing the Right Resources to the Right People

Savage understands that one-size-fits-all training sessions aren't necessarily the right approach to educating employees. "We can't get everyone together and go over order entry for an hour," she says. "People learn at different speeds. The Custom Education Program helps us offer training for each individual's specific needs."

Savage has used the Custom Education Program to develop six tests for employees at different levels of her organization. "We've created a basic order entry test for every sales representative," she says. "We've developed an advanced inventory management test for our product managers, and I'm planning on taking a system administrator test."

Savage says that the Custom Education Program helps her ensure that the company maximizes its return on investment on its Activant solution. "We've been using our solution for almost a year now, and it's hard to go back and teach people the things they may not have learned during initial training sessions," Savage says. "The Custom Education Program helps identify areas in which we need help, and let us use every part of the solution to the best of our ability."

Plus, targeted education will save Stellar Industrial money. "We'll spend money on resources we need, and our employees will work smarter, not harder," she concludes.
